Virat and Rohit will play odi for Australia Tour?

In an unexpected move within the Indian white-ball organization, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the ODI squad for an upcoming tour to Australia, confirming the long-anticipated return of both batting greats.

Situation & Squad Announcement

The Indian selection panel, chaired by lead selector Ajit Agarkar, convened in Ahmedabad to announce the touring squad for three ODIs and five T20Is in Australia. In a major switch-up, Shubman Gill has been named the new ODI captain of India, succeeding Rohit Sharma in the role. From the other changes, Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain.

Nevertheless, Rohit has kept his spot in the ODI group - despite giving up the captaincy of the ODI team - along with Kohli, marking their ODI "return" from Test and T20 cricket.

Why Bring Them Back?

Kohli and Rohit last represented India during the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. Their return brings several strategic considerations on the part of selectors:

Experience, stability: Experience is important in quick and challenging Australian conditions. Kohli and Rohit have a history of performance in pressure-cooker situations, providing experience devices to a primarily youthful batting line-up.

Transitional leadership & World Cup planning: As India prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the combination of building a new leadership group while keeping quality remains on the agenda. Gill's promotion is part of that leadership transition; however, keeping veterans keeps that balance.

Selection based on merit in the one format: Even though both of them have stepped away from Test cricket and T20s, it seems the Indian selectors would prefer to keep them around in the only format they are interested in keeping them for - ODIs.

Our Challenges & Questions

Their return comes with some risks and uncertainties:

Match fitness and match form: Neither played extensively or at all in international matches recently, so they must be cleared fit to play matches. Reports state that Kohli and Rohit passed fitness tests.

Role definition: Gill is now captain, and it will require more from Kohli and Rohit to accept roles that are more supportive and more thinking of helping to shape innings, looking to mentor younger players and trying to produce runs when needed.

Both also have age factors to consider: at 38 (Rohit) and close to 38 (Kohli), how sustainable would they be playing a full series in Australia and even when we look ahead as we bring in more tournaments?

Some outside voices: some former selectors and analysts have openly suggested not selecting them, so it could be difficult to gauge their tournament prep heading into the tournament.

Squad and Schedule Overview

The ODI squad to Australia is as follows:

Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal

The series begins on October 19 in Perth with the first ODI, and will continue in Adelaide (Oct 23) and Sydney (Oct 25). After the ODI games, there are five T20 Internationals slated to begin on October 29.

What to watch for

Batting order changes: The team has decided to make some changes in order to get Rohit and Kohli in positions they are used to - whether as anchors or finishers - given the several competent batters they have.

Mentoring: The value of having both in the team is they will remain level-headed in high-pressure situations, particularly with rookie players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Reddy, or Harshit Rana.

Message to selectors: By selecting the two, the selectors are demonstrating that although they are building a team for the future about batting around youth (Gill, Iyer, etc.), there will still be a reliance on experience in the format of an ODI.

To wrap up, the selection of Kohli and Rohit in India's ODI squad for the Australian series, is not remarkably thrilling, however, it does recognize their longstanding production and it places a nuanced management responsibility on the selectors. As Gill takes the helm, the responsibility rests with the veterans to justify their selection and lead India to present a team that is symbiotic and competitive in the 50-over format.
